I started my passion for DJing back in the early 90s as a teenager actually building a DJ mixer from the spare parts of old electronics people would give me. From there I have developed my skills and experience which has helped me to create my main business Freelance Soundlabs where I now offer my expertise for many different areas of audio.
My setup is fully modular and fully mobile, I come to you, setup and get the party going then will break down and head off. For remote parties willing to hire my services for late nights I am also equipped to stay on-site allowing a late night party without the DJ having to abandon you at midnight, this has been a draw card for many people and often I am hired through contact at parties.
No gig is too big or small, tho the equipment on hand will service a venue of up to about 100 people so weddings, town halls, outdoor gatherings. Larger events would need more specialised equipment hired.
System Overview
This is a fully custom designed modular system I have built over many years with the main goal of delivering good sounding music in all environments!
Sound System
Different environments have completely different acoustic properties and through experience and many different setups I built my current system around a “Power Amp” rack rather than self powered speakers with separate EQ capabilities of each speaker.
While this is not as convenient as self powered speakers it offers a major advantage in the ability to detect the acoustics of a room via microphones and adjust the sound to best fit the environment. This will avoid having “ear piercing” or poor sounding music due to the characteristics of the room, we do proper sound checks before your party gets under way.
The equipment consists of a Behringer iNuke 6000w 4ch amp with an additional 2ch 200w amp for extra subs or as a backup.
Sound is tailored via a 32 band stereo linked EQ and dual 15 band 2CH EQ to adjust the sets of speakers.
Speakers we provide are the main dual 15″ tower speakers and single 15″ “topper” speakers. These toppers are either placed on top of the duals or for large events can be placed apart from the main speakers on stands to deliver sound to a larger area.
I use Serato DJ software with a Numak NS7III controller specifically because this controller has motorised 7″ record styled platters that I am familiar in using but I also have a compact Akai controller for backup or for small gigs where a full setup is simply not needed.
Wireless microphones and hard wired microphone are also available for events.
Lighting / Effects
WARNING: Flashing Lights!
Optional but recommended for any good party is the lighting and effects setup. This is not just a bunch of random lights plugged in, this is a carefully programmed setup of specific lights and effects that have pre-programmed sequences to put on a show.
All lighting is connected via DMX data cables to a main light controller that is used to control the lights in pre-programmed sequences in time with music, not just random music activated lighting. This allows manual takeover at any time so we can easily set the lighting mood for your nights events. Want a slow dance with some “mirror ball” styled effects, no problem. Want the lasers and strobes to light up the dance floor? No need to ask, we will select the right lighting profile for the music playing.
We also provide smoke machine (subject to venue suitability) and for the kids we have commercial grade bubble machines that can crank out the bubbles and prizes to get them dancing like maniacs.

Music Selection / Karaoke
I have curated a large collection of music and based on feedback from customers I am adding to this collection where possible if I do not have it available.
My collection consists of almost everything from the 60s up to today’s music and I spend unimaginable amounts of time curating all my music, tagging and formatting everything in my collection so it is easy to find by song, artist, album, year, genre and even rating and number of plays. I constantly invest time building collections of music just as old school DJs made crates of records so I can find things fast.
in addition to my huge local and offline collection (where no internet access is needed) I also have access to play anything from Spotify or Soundcloud and if you happen to have some music on USB that I do not have access to, I can even play that for you too.
My knowledge of music is quite extensive tho I would say due to my age of 40+ I am much more knowledgeable on almost all music between 1970 and 2015 but am constantly keeping up to date on new music.
As for Karaoke, Who doesn’t enjoy some terrible singing from unqualified participants?
Karaoke is available as an optional package and can be DJ’ed and mixed in with your party or provided as a standalone package. Switch from music to Karaoke mode at any time. We provide folders of selections (over 8000 options) so guests can browse and choose something they want to have a crack at and we provide a lyrics screen and microphones to use.
Typically where we have run these events there is either set times Karaoke will run or guests request a karaoke song just as you would a typical music track and we will call up a guest for their performance. It is always amazing how quickly reserved people that would never try and sing in public get the bug and it always ends with laughs and a good time. I encourage anyone to consider this as an option for a fun night

DJing is a hard life, people don’t want to simply pay for someone to play a list of music that Spotify can play, or to just play a pre-practiced set of music you have never heard. The role of a DJ is just as much providing the system to play music as it is to read the room and decide what kind of music is needed.
